Over the years, chemical fertilizers have depleted our soils and left us with a disaster. While appearing to have aided growth, unbalanced commercial fertilizers have caused plants to grow without the availability of essential trace minerals which would naturally make the plants resistant to diseases and parasites. To compensate for this inevitable vulnerability, the response has been to add increasing levels of dangerously toxic poisons to deal with the threats. When the parasites go away (because they have been poisoned), we feel validated. In reality, the diseases and parasites which remain are naturally designed to mutate, favoring those genes not as susceptible to the poison du jour. When the mutated parasites later proliferate, we come up with more and deadlier pesticides, herbicides, and additional "fertilizers".  And the cycle continues. Victims in the poison wars are in two groups (and may be in both at the same time). First are the people who have to live on or near the lands and waterways being so badly polluted. These are the farmers and their neighbors, many of them even thousands of miles away from the pollution sources. They are affected by the air they breathe and the water they drink and in which they bathe. And sometimes they get to "enjoy" the poisons in direct contact with their bodies. They pay a heavy price. Second are the millions of people who have to eat the depleted and deficient foods which lack vital nutrients they were designed to pull from the soil and pass on to the eaters. Additionally, these same "foods" invariably contain levels of poisonous contaminates we were never designed to have to cope. This group, too, pays dearly for this situation. On the one hand, government regulators readily admit that our foods contain poisons. On the other hand, we are told that the levels are "acceptable". Asking those whose lives and health have been adversely affected without their knowledge and consent may raise a question or two about what is "acceptable" by and for whom and why. So, while we have succeeded in growing bigger, faster, higher yielding crops and other plants, we are producing more and more of things containing what we never should be exposed to and less and less of what we truly need. It is a vicious and dangerous cycle.
